Warriors star Stephen Curry says he’s ‘fine’ after tweaking his right ankle at practice

Stephen Curry tweaked his right ankle during the Golden State Warriors’ open practice in San Francisco on Sunday night and limped to the locker room, but coach Steve Kerr told reporters afterward that the star guard avoided a major issue.

Curry was lined up against reserve guard De’Anthony Melton on the wing when he slipped and misstepped. He showed frustration by banging the basketball on the floor. Play stopped, and Curry’s teammates expressed immediate concern at his discomfort. Several staffers went down the tunnel to visit Curry, including Kerr.

Status unclear, but team says injury “not serious”

There is no immediate word on Curry’s status. A team source reiterated that the ankle tweak is “not serious.”

Cautious build-up after injury-hit season

Curry missed 43 games last season, including 27 for persistent pain and swelling in his right knee. The Warriors have purposefully ramped up his court work more slowly this season, lightening his practice time and minutes in the preseason. He turns 39 in March.

The Warriors open the season on Wednesday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers.
