Boston Celtics Set to Re-sign Guard Payton Pritchard to Two-Year, $44.2M Contract

Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard has agreed to a two-year, $44.2 million contract extension, plus a mutual option for the 2029-30 season, CAA co-head of basketball Austin Brown and agent Max Saidman confirmed on Tuesday.

Pritchard, the 2024 NBA champion and 2025 Sixth Man of the Year, secures a fully guaranteed two-year maximum extension that keeps him a key long-term member of the retooled Celtics. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged career highs in points (17), assists (5.2) and rebounds (3.9) last season.

The deal keeps Pritchard for an additional season after his current contract ends in 2028. He will earn over $21 million for the 2028-29 season before a mutual option for 2029-30 worth nearly $23 million. That option allows either side to opt in for the final season of his contract, which also opens the window for extension talks that summer.

Pritchard is currently on a deal that pays him $7.8 million this season and $8.3 million next season.

A breakout role in Boston

Pritchard flourished last season, starting 50 games and helping to ease the loss of Jayson Tatum for most of the year by taking on a bigger role in the offence. His touches per game rose from 51.8 in 2024-25 to nearly 70 last season, the second-largest increase among the 33 players to record at least 4,000 touches in each season.

Pritchard, 28, is one of four players in Celtics history to make at least 200 three-pointers in multiple seasons, alongside Tatum, Derrick White and Antoine Walker. He has also been remarkably durable across his six NBA seasons. His 241 games over the past three years is tied for the third-most in the league during that span.

Long-term commitment

The deal takes Pritchard, the No. 26 pick by Boston in the 2020 NBA draft, through at least his ninth season with the franchise. If the option is picked up, it extends to a tenth.
