Post subject:  best n/a mitsu engine

good evening gentlemen,

There's a local racing championship that happens here that i'm hoping to join, and my hope is to enter with a Mitsubishi, and not go down the common route of using a Honda, but quite frankly i'm losing on that hope since i can barely find street mods for them not to mention race spec mods. so i'm hoping you guys have more insight on this.

i want to compare the 4g92 Mivec DOHC AND THE 4G93 DOHC. Note that turbos are not allowed in the series and there are 2 classes, 1801cc - 2000cc and below 1800 cc, so no bigger displacements either. I need to be anal a bit and ask you to post the engine's name and then answer each of my questions as far as your knowledge goes

-how rare the engine is.
-how expensive the engine is.
-how the engine responds to mods.
-how readily available are race spec mods.
-how reliable and durable the engine is, i don't want it to go belly up from the first race.

also i might consider the 4g18 since this is what we get in our lancers and probably will be cheaper, so if you guys have any idea about this engine list it ahead, and any engines that you suggest also list in the same way.

4G92-MIVEC DOHC 16 Valve
Total Displacement - 1597cc
Bore - 81.0mm
Stroke - 77.5mm
Compression Ratio - 11:1
Maximum Output - 128 kW (174 PS; 172 bhp) @ 7,500 rpm
Maximum Torque - 167 N·m (123 ft·lbf) @ 7,000 rpm

4G93 DOHC 16 Valve
Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI)
Total Displacement - 1834cc
Bore - 81.0mm
Stroke - 89.0mm
Compression Ratio - 12:1
Maximum Output - 96 kW (131 PS; 129 bhp) / 103 kW (140 PS; 138 bhp) @ 6,000 rpm
Maximum Torque - 177 N·m (131 ft·lbf) @ 3,750 rpm / 181 N·m (133 ft·lbf) @ 3,500 rpm

The SOHC 4G18 displaces 1.6 L (1584 cc) with a bore and stroke of 76.0 mm x 87.3 mm. It is a 4-valve per cylinder engine. Output is 105 PS net at 6000 rpm (Middle East specifications), 122 ps gross (Gulf Countries specification), 96 PS net with 151 NM (European specifications). (we get the 122hp version)

If you're allowed it a 4G93 Mivec hybrid might serve your purpose, otherwise I'd say definitely the 4G92 Mivec over the 4G93 DOHC.

Without knowing the regulations you're have to run to, its difficult to say but a full race 4G92 Mivec will make as much power as a 4G93 DOHC and you'd be down one class with that engine - its a no brainer really. The 4G1* series engines are a poor choice for a race engine compared to the 4G9*. The other engines to consider are the 4G6* in naturally aspirated form, either SOHC or DOHC.

But my choice would be 4G92 Mivec

-how rare the engine is
- not common place but available
-how expensive the engine is - no idea I live in a different country to you £700 -£1000 GBP in UK
-how the engine responds to mods - vague question, don't now what mods you're allowed, all engines respond similarly to mods, engines is engines is engines
-how readily available are race spec mods. - fairly well but have to be inported from Japan, Aus or NZ
-how reliable and durable the engine is - all mitsi lumps are pretty bullet proof providing you build em right and get he mapping right.

I'm not sure about the hybrid but i'm pretty sure it would cost a pretty penny, plus add weight, unless it's a different hybrid than what i have in mind.

the 4G6x don't seem to rev so high, even my 4G18 revs to 7k though it says that max output is at 6k, but i will be looking into them, probably with mods they should rev higher, but up till now the 92 seems like the best choice, but for the prices you mentioned even though it's a lot more expensive than the 4G18, but probably worth the money if i got my hand on one, and the reason i asked the question or even started the thread is because when i read about the 92 yesterday i instantly thought this is the engine that i want, but as i read about it here and there i see people saying that bolt on's like exhaust and intake didn't do much for it with out a tune, that's obvious in some cars but i thought i'd ask around and see since those comments seem to be from a bunch of rice burners and some one with on hand experience should benefit me more.

oh and i've already ruled out the 4G93 since some one told me from watching my vid that it's pretty much good with the 4G18 over it, and like you said i'd be down a class, whilst with the 93 i'd be in the higher class and with less money than the other competition i'd pretty much be a spec in the back.

As people have said i think the no brainer choice is a untouched 4G92 Mivec, a 4G93 will put you in the 1801cc and above class and just putting a mivec head on it wont gain you anything except less revs :D

Go the factory 1.6 mivec its a great motor and with a few light mods and some weight reduction, you will be in the top end of the field :D

does it have to be a 4 cyl engine?
how about a 6A10 1.6 V6 hybrid with 6A12 Mivec Heads on it?
just an idea, no idea how feasible it is but surely would be an awesome 1600cc class engine?

Will anything ever be able to be quicker than an EK9? Realistically...

Yes you can compete with ek. Its more a question of can you compete with old school toyotas! I should never have sold my AE86.

Comes down to the driver more than the car in a lot of cases.

I've beaten hondas with K20a's in them with my pug which only has 128hp... so ya..

Cause the 1.8 and 1.9 aren't factory mitsu engines.

4g92 mivec, bigger throttle body, good exhaust system, cold air intake , re map and weight loss and youll be kicking ek civic but, my borg was always much better on the twistys then my mates ek9
